What can be done about the leaking Show of hands Instant manicure jar? – Heather LaBounty
Heather, it is important to note that this is not a situation of poor quality, nor is it a situation that is specific to BeautiControl.
Oil has a tendency to seep out of plastic containers that have had the seal removed. The heat pressure seal is applied to the container to keep it from leaking during shipment. Once the seal is removed, the product becomes difficult to travel with. Although the product COULD be put into a tube to eliminate the leaking, it would negate the efficacy of the product significantly. Stirring the product to mix the oil and salt is necessary to create the appropriate mixture of salt and oil.
We will continue to work on ways to perfect this technology. Here are some things that are helpful to note:
• If the seal has been removed, do not travel with them unless you put them in a baggie first.
• ALWAYS wipe the outside threads of the jar and the inside threads of the lid with a clean cloth or paper towel before securing the lid. This will prevent any salt deposits from preventing a proper seal on the jar.
Have we considered a Baby Care Line?
Have the ingredients on the neck wraps changed? They smell different - Christy Lamb
Christy, actually, we have considered and did the initial development work for a line of baby products. When it came time to bring the product to the market, we made the decision to shelve the products. Our expertise is anti-aging skin care and color cosmetics. We do not have a reputation for baby care products. When you combine the low sales volume and the high cost of safety testing on infants, the retail price-point would never be something that is competitive in today’s marketplace. For the time being, we will leave this market to the giants who currently own the baby care categories and play in the arenas that we are most well known for.
No, the ingredients in the neck wraps have not changed. Remember, these are natural ingredients. The delicate nuances of the odors will vary from batch to batch and from harvest to harvest. It would be unusual that they would not vary in odor with each shipment.
What are the active ingredients in the eye patches?
When would you recommend the Platinum Plus to a younger age group? -Pia Carlson
Pia, the ingredients in the eye patches are as follows:
• Water (Aqua)
• Glycerin
• Sodium Polyacrylate
• Dipropylene Glycol
• Kappaphycus Alvarezii - an ocean based botanical
• Palmaria Palmata Extract – red algae extract
• Paeonia Suffruticosa – peony extract
• Betula Alba Bark - white birch bark
• Houttuynia Cordata - chameleon plant
• Alcloxa
• Sodium Polyacrylate
I would certainly recommend the Skinlogics Platinum Plus line for anyone over the age of 50 or those under the age of 50 that might suffer from extremely dry skin conditions. Unless you have very dry skin, or do not have the more advanced signs of aging, you will likely not see the dramatic benefits as someone who really needs such advanced treatments.
Who did the makeup for the fashion show at Celebration? What makeup technique was used? - Keith Harley
Keith, we work with a local makeup artist here in Dallas who is affiliated with a modeling agency. We have used him for years for staff makeup, as well as makeup for the fashion show. He is a genius and I really enjoy working with him.
The great thing about him is that he really does not use a specific technique. He is inspired by each person that sits in his chair, and lets their features and personality guide him. He is very much an artist. I can tell you that he did use Classic Red lip color on all of the models as red is one of the key lip color shades for the fall and holiday season.
What spa products are most successful with males? What products attract male consumers? - George Castillo
George, selling products to men is totally dictated by the attitude of the man in question. Some men do good to wash their face, while others dive in and use more products that most women. I am guilty of the latter.
When offering products to men, I have personally had great success with products that have a high sensory experience that offer immediate results. Such products would include:
• Show of Hands Instant Manicure - for rough, outdoor hands. This product also works GREAT to break down hard to clean compounds that get on the hands and under the nails such as grease, oil, dirt, etc.
• Save Your Sole Foot Salve – every man loves this one
• Therma Del Sol Detoxifying Bath Soak and Luxuries of the Sea Instant Comfort Gel – this is great for those of us who are weekend warriors and still think we are 18, but our bodies disagree.
• Protective Services or Corticure Comfort lotion – to help with razor burn and mild skin irritations
• Hand and Nail Therapy Cream – to help treat man hands.
• Luxuries of the Sea Salt Glow – this is a heavy duty skin scrub and men seem to love it.
• A recent favorite of many men is the Spa Escapes Peppermint Pulse-point Lotion – I have a neighbor that swears by it to help his stress and headaches.
• Microderm Abrasion – The results are immediate and men are fascinated by mechanics, so I think this one appeals to guys who like gadgets.
• Skinlogics SPF Lip Balm stick – A must have for any man!
Why does the mascara smell old? - Cyndy R
Mascara has a distinct smell that is typical of the base ingredients. We do not include added fragrances, like many other brands, to cover the base odor. When formulating products for the eyes, in particular, we do not use any excessive ingredients that might cause any sort of sensitivity for our clients.
Here are a few questions that I get on a weekly basis:
What products should be avoided during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, it is recommended to avoid any product that contains a high % of Retinol. Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A and is found in Regeneration Time to Go. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is stored in the body rather for an extended period of time. Excessive levels of Vitamin A in the body has been linked to certain forms of birth defects. It is best to visit with a physician regarding vitamin A in both topical and ingestible forms.
Different physicians have differing opinions on this issue. It is best to consult your physician when you become pregnant and discuss what products you are using.
What products can be used in a hot tub or jetted bath tub?
It is not recommended to use any oil-based additives, foaming bath additives or non-dissolving exfoliants in your jetted tub.
Powdered bath minerals or non-foaming bath additives can be added without concern for the tub mechanics, i.e. Therapeutic Bath Minerals.
We do not have any products that would be recommended as an addition to a hot tub, where the water is not drained after every use.
What can I say to a client that is concerned with safety of cosmetic ingredients?
The cosmetic industry is committed to providing the highest quality, safest personal care products possible. Constant research into new ingredients and new formulations ensures that the industry provides such products. Cost is never a consideration for safety.
In the United States, cosmetics are regulated under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, which is enforced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has abundant legal authority to regulate the safety of cosmetic products. FDA, however, has had comparatively little need to use its authority because cosmetics are composed of safe ingredients and because, when necessary, the cosmetic industry has acted voluntarily to prevent safety problems.
The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) outlaws unsafe or misbranded cosmetic products. It gives FDA the authority:
• To ban or restrict ingredients for safety reasons,
• To mandate warning labels,
• To inspect manufacturing facilities,
• To issue warning letters,
• To seize illegal products,
• To enjoin unlawful activities,
• To prosecute violators,
• To work with manufacturers in implementing nationwide product recalls.
The American cosmetics industry works closely with the FDA to ensure the safety of all cosmetics products sold in the United States. In addition, the cosmetics industry has supported an independent panel of world-class medical and scientific experts, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel (CIR), for almost 30 years in the United States. The CIR Expert Panel must meet the same conflict of interest requirements regarding financial interests as special non-government advisory experts to FDA.
The charge to this scientific body is to look at all available data and assess the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics. The deliberations are completely open and in public, and the Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Federation of America both have liaison members who participate in the deliberations of the Panel. Additionally, anyone from the public who has information can offer it for consideration. CIR publishes its findings in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Toxicology. We believe such an open, public process that includes representation from the government and consumers and considers all of the available data, is the appropriate manner to substantiate the safety of cosmetic ingredients.
The bottom line for American consumers is that they can have complete confidence that the products they use are safe.
Are BeautiControl’s product considered “all natural’ or “organic”?
While we include many natural ingredients in all of our products, we do not market our products as "all-natural". The claim "all natural" is a misnomer, in fact. According to governmental regulations, "all natural" would imply that 100% of the ingredients are from a natural source.
Similarly, the same applies to an "organic" claim. According to FDA regulations, no product can be considered "organic" unless at least 95% of its composition is comprised of organic ingredients. Organic means that no artificial chemicals or fertilizer was used during the growth of these botanically derived ingredients.
These guidelines would disqualify the majority of products on the market today from being considered "organic" or "all natural". In order to give products a stable shelf life and keep them free from bacteria, we have to include a number of preservatives and stabilizers in our formulas. In fact, the only truly "organic" or "all natural" cosmetic products would need to be refrigerated at all times in order to keep them safe for use.
That being said, we do include a great number of organic/natural ingredients in our products, for their beneficial properties. Many of them don't appear to be "organic" on the ingredient listing because we use their chemical compound description in compliance with FDA regulations.
What can I do to prevent my Skinlogics tonics and my lash and lid bath caps from leaking when I travel?
There are really only 3 types of closures for bottles, and everyone in the industry uses one of the three.
3 types of closures for bottles:
• standard screw top - (Very inexpensive, less convenient to use, difficult for those with arthritic hands)
• flip top - (fairly in-expensive, lower quality, sometimes difficult to open. The "hinge" on this type of cap tends to break with frequent use)
• disc top (this is the highest quality of all the caps, most frequently used in cosmetic products, easy to open and close, convenient for dispensing, tends to get bumped and open in travel or pop open when exposed to a pressurized environment). We use this type of closure on all of our skin care bottles.
If we move out of the disc top cap in order to make the packages more "travel-able" we would compromise the quality and convenience of the product for at-home use.
On September 1, we will introduce screw top caps that can be purchased as a sales aid for use during travel.
