Makeup artists played with dark and light this season, working soft and neutral tones into the skin one moment then pulling out pots of deep rouge and atmospheric ink the next. Take that as your cue to make a statement with a rich excess — or sleek absence — of color on lids, lashes and lips. Either way, it’s forward thinking for fall.
It’s time to discuss the big, the bad, and the bold beauty trends we can expect to see this season, as dictated by the runways at Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week. From lips, to eyes, to skin, here are a few of the makeup looks that will be popular this fall.
Bold Lip
Dominating the runways this season were bold lips in every shade of red, from deep crimson to coral. Many a model was seen rocking a more or less neutral face, with chiseled features and larger-than-life lip shades. The overall effect is to draw attention to the lips, and to keep it there. Following the typical rule of thumb for deeper shades, the textures of the lip looks veered more to the matte and satin side, forgoing the effects a glossier lip may have.
The Smoky Eye
Always a classic, the smoky eye provides a dose of the dramatic to your look. Typically done in varying shades of black, grey, and brown, this versatile favorite made several appearances on the runways this season in unexpected shades. From pink, to blue, to green, some of the bold eye makeup looks certainly made a statement. This fall, take a chance with your eye makeup and utilize colorful shades in your smoky eye.
Retro-Glam Eyeliner
The retro look saw a major comeback via dramatic eyeliner and heavy, full lashes. The look is easy to execute, with the right liquid liner, technique, and intensely volumizing mascara. A sexy blast from the past, this look is one that we will surely continue to see time and time again.
Fresh-Faced Simplicity
Clean, dewy skin was a major part of this season’s beauty trends. Models were prepped and primed with just the right amount of products to achieve a glowing, natural look. Makeup artists added a slightly chiseled appearance through the use of matte, contouring shades of powder and bronzer.
Red Red Wine
Red is always right for fall but the most captivating looks featured a deep mulled-wine stain with rich chocolate undertones. Finishes ranged from creamy matte to high patent-leather gloss, all offset by perfect skin for contrast. The beauty is in the prep work: buff away any flakes with Lip Apeel before layering clear balm underneath your red to adjust the intensity to your liking.
Futuristic Eyes
Makeup artists were anything but shy backstage applying deeply pigmented cream shadows while lining and smudging in dramatic rich liners. While you might not choose to go to such extremes, you can push the edge a little more than usual with a dramatically black liner applied in thick strokes and saturated eye shadows swooped beyond the outer corners to accentuate your gaze.
Defined Brows
With all the backward glances made to retro elegance this season, it’s no wonder that beautifully strong brows continued to draw attention. Play up your shape by feathering on pencils and shadows to accentuate the arch.
Multi-Toned Eyes
Statement-making eyes were the talk of the fall shows. For a chic and wearable version, look for shadows with hints of silver or gold mixed into the color to soften the effect and complement your skin tone. Deep, dramatic color is the look of the season, so don’t be shy…you might just surprise yourself.
Smoky Browns
Fashion loves to reinvent black, and judging by the array of browns and brown-based shades used backstage. The beauty of this smoldering shade is its versatility — it can be layered on for more or less intensity and suits all complexions.
